Front allies clash and loot

Canning, Dec. 8: At least a dozen people were injured in a series of clashes between supporters of the CPM and the RSP in villages skirting the town.

Houses were damaged and looted for hours as supporters of the Left Front partners hurled bombs and fired from guns.

The South 24-Parganas police had to fire several rounds in the air to bring the situation under control. The Rapid Action Force has been deployed. Senior police officers, including sub-divisional officer Subhankar Sinha Sarkar, have rushed to the spot.

Many villagers have fled homes for Basanti, across the Matla river. Trouble broke out at Golabari and spread to Chetua, Madhukhali, Sandeshkhali, North and South Budokhali. Supporters of both parties claimed they were attacked first.

CPM leader Dulal Ghosh said trouble was brewing over cultivation, yesterday it took a serious turn when a party leader was attacked. The RSP said the story was “hatched with the panchayat polls in mind”.
