Kodaliya school in semi-finals

New Delhi: Prasanna Banga Vidyalaya from Kodaliya in South 24 Parganas became the first Bengal team to enter the semi-finals of the 42nd Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament on Monday. Local Apex Public School also entered the last-four on Monday.

In what was arguably the finest match of the meet, the Kodaliya lads overcame a tenacious St John Bosco High School, Sohra, Meghalaya 2-1 while the Delhi boys beat a ten-member Sports College Lucknow 4-0 in the other quarter final.

The Bengal team rode a brace from central midfielder Sheikh Siddique while Baistarrad Majaw pulled one back for the Meghalaya team.

In the other quarter final, a brace by striker Sumit Debnath enabled Apex School canter to victory. He scored in the 10th and 36th minutes. Subroto Baidya(38) and Sayantan Das Roy (52) also scored for the winners.

Over-age players

Of the 464 players in the Subroto Mukherjee Cup junior meet, 45 were disqualified for being over-aged. The sub-junior Cup kicks off Wednesday, with no Bengal team Bengal participating.
