Australia, Netherlands make semis

Perth: Netherlands and Australia secured semi-final berths from pool B in the women’s World Cup hockey Tuesday.

While Netherlands were forced to a 1-1 draw by Spain, Australia thrashed South Africa 5-0. Netherlands had more scoring chances in the first half but Spain looked sharper and attacked with more purpose.

Netherlands went ahead 16 minutes from time when Janneke Schopman converted the fourth penalty corner.

The Spaniards mounted pressure with Nuria Camon equalising with a flick goal shortly before the close.

For Australia, Julie Towers, Angie Skirving and Nicki Hudson scored in the first half while Bianca Netzler and Melanie Twitt struck the board in the second.

In other matches, Japan beat Ireland 1-0 and England edged out US 1-0.
