SAI into quarters with clean slate

New Delhi: SAI Eastern Centre of Calcutta entered the quarter finals of the 2002 Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Central Muslim Public School, Jammu and Kashmir, in a Group 8 league match on Monday. With this win, SAI topped their group with an all-win record in three matches.

SAI beat another Calcutta outfit, Govt High School, 2-0 and earlier had upset Birendra Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyala, Nepal 1-0.

In the knock-out quarter finals, SAI meet last year’s runners-up Army Boys Bangalore — winners of Group 6 — on Wednesday. The other Bengal outfit in the last eight, Kali Prasana Banga Vidyalaya of Kodalia play their final group encounter on Tuesday.

Bangladesh Krira Pratishthan came second in Group 7 and were eliminated. They were held to a goalless draw by Govt. Secondary School, Mus from the Anadaman and Nicobar Islands, who made it to the next stage.

Amit Nag scored a double while Sujit Adhikari, Pankaj Samaddar and Suman Chandra Dey struck one each for the winners. Waseem Yusuf was the lone scorer for the Srinagar school.
