4 left dead on mishap Monday

Four persons were killed and five injured in a spate of road accidents across the city on mishap Monday. Police managed to arrest two of the drivers and impound their killer vehicles.

The first accident occurred while it was still dark, on B.T. Road, near Cossipore police station, when two youths on a scooter were hit by a lorry.

Deepankar Dalal, 25, and Manas Halder, 26, died on the spot. Sivaji Ghosh, deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) said local residents took them to R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared the duo “brought dead”.

Later in the day, a 36-year-old cyclist was knocked down and killed by a minibus on Gariahat Road. Police said Man Singh was taken to Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan, but could not be saved. The driver was arrested and the bus impounded.

A labourer appointed by the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners was killed and another seriously injured when a speeding Matador hit them on Vidyasagar Setu. Dilip Khara succumbed to his injuries on way to SSKM Hospital, while the condition of Bakul Dolui is stated to be critical. Police nabbed the driver and impounded the vehicle.

A newly-wed couple and two of their relatives were injured when a private bus on route 44 hit their Maruti van at Ultadanga. The injured were admitted to Maniktala ESI Hospital.
