India on Unilever back-office radar

Calcutta, Dec. 1: India is on Unilever’s radar for sourcing back-office support, James Duckworth, chief auditor of the FMCG behemoth and the former leader of its IT initiative, said.

“We always look for opportunities, and we keep an eye on developments in India. India has always been on our radar for setting up a back-office hub,” said Duckworth, who is in the city to attend Infocom 2002.

Duckworth, who led the IT initiatives at Unilever, will share his views on how IT can be used for value creation in companies at the Nasscom-Businessworld event.

“The IT strategy of a company has to be business-led, and business people, not the IT people, should spearhead the process,” he said.

He lauded the achievements of Indian infotech companies which have made their presence felt the world over during the past 10 years.

“India has the unique combination of abilities and facilities—you get qualified manpower at competitive rates.”
