Councillor wife goes missing

Chandannagar, Dec. 1: The wife of Tarak Singh, a Trinamul Congress councillor of Champdani Municipality, last night disappeared from the sub-divisional hospital here, where she had been admitted after being battered by her husband.

“Tarak Singh, 33, allegedly assaulted his wife, Sobha, 30, on November 29 and abused her. Sobha rushed here next morning, asking for help,” said Debasish Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Bhadreswar police station.

Singh was arrested yesterday afternoon following his wife’s FIR. “Sobha said her husband had a long-standing extra-marital affair and used to beat her up,” said police sources.

Sources at the hospital said Singh’s followers came last evening to transfer Sobha to a nursing home. She refused to go. They then offered her Rs 2 lakh to withdraw the FIR. She refused again. “The rowdies returned at night,” they said.

Hospital authorities lodged an FIR at 10.30 pm, saying Sobha was missing. Patients in the female ward said Sobha was removed last night by outsiders while ward master Paresh Pal said her relatives got her discharged on Sunday morning.
