Poddar’s gold rush

Calcutta: Pankaj Poddar had a dream run in the national shooting championship, recently held in Bangalore. He won two individual golds and then helped Railways claim another two in the meet.

Sandip Kundu was the solitary success for Bengal in the meet, winning a bronze in free rifle three position individual event, according to information received here.

Pankaj, a product of Srirampur Shooting Centre, won invidual events of both free rifle prone and three position. He then teamed up with Abhijit Mazumdar and Biswajit Sinde to clinch the top position in free rifle team event as well as Shyamal Das and Nilesh Rane en route to claiming free rifle three position team gold.

Chess honour

Fide has conferred the international arbiter (IA) title on Udayan Kanti Ghosh during the recently concluded Chess Olympiad. Ghosh is the secretary of the West Bengal Chess Association.
