Man killed, cops puzzled

Akhter Ali, 42, was shot dead while walking down Gobra Road, in Topsia, on Friday afternoon. Police said Ali, from Mullickpur, in the Baruipur area, had come to the city on Friday morning to buy sandals and shoes from Mullickbazar.

Ali’s friends told sleuths he had spent an hour in Mullickbazar, buying sandals and shoes and packing the footwear in plastic bags. “He left alone for home,’’ one of the friends said.

Deputy commissioner of police, detective department, Soumen Mitra, said his men were clueless about the motive of the murder. “Ali is a wholesale dealer in sandals in Mullickpur. He buys shoes and sandals in bulk from Mullickbazar and walks to Park Circus station. There, he takes a train to Baruipur,’’ a police officer said.

Beniapukur police found the plastic bags with the footwear beside Ali’s body. “He had about Rs 100 in his hip pocket,’’ a police officer added. Ali has no criminal record, the cops admitted.

Several people were questioned but no one had witnessed the killing. Local cops said drug addicts frequent the area and it is crime prone. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Deputy commissioner Mitra said Ali had been shot once in the head. Later in the evening, two persons were detained for questioning.
