Raju returns to hills as gentleman

Darjeeling, Nov. 28: Shah Rukh is returning to where he started out from — on his journey to fame.

King Khan will be in town for a month starting December 2 to shoot for choreographer Farha Khan’s directorial debut Main Hoon Na. Giving him company will be former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen, who stars opposite him.

For Shah Rukh, Darjeeling holds happy memories as it was here, a decade ago, that he shot for Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, the Aziz Mirza film that catapulted him to the Bollywood big league.

Then he played a young man from a small town who sets out for Mumbai with nothing but a pocketful of dreams. He returns to Darjeeling to star as a college lecturer.

A major sequence of Main Hoon Na will be filmed at St Paul’s School, which is being given a facelift.

Darjeeling superintendent of police Sanjay Chander said Shah Rukh’s visit was finalised during Farha Khan’s recce mission three weeks ago.

Though the administration is tightlipped on where the stars will stay, sources said Shah Rukh has been booked into the Windamere. Sushmita and Farha Khan are also likely to occupy suites there.

The other members of the entourage will most probably be given rooms at Cedar Inn and Valentino. A few unit hands will stay at St Paul’s School itself. However, none of the hotels confirmed the bookings.

Ravi Maya, manager Cedar Inn, said though the bookings had been made, they were yet to be confirmed.

Sources said room heaters were being despatched to St Paul’s School to keep out the chill. A Bangalore-based unit has already arrived and is constructing a cafeteria in the school complex.

Chander said all arrangements had been made to ensure security for the stars. “We will make adequate security arrangements. Moreover, the stars will be basically sticking to the hotel and the school with a one-day shoot at the Darjeeling railway station. There should be no problems on the security front,” he said.

While St Paul’s and hotel authorities are loath to speak on Shah Rukh’s visit , sources said three song sequences will be filmed in Darjeeling. Farha Khan, who will also choreograph the movie, is believed to have selected the site for the song-and-dance sequences when she was here earlier this month.

Sources said the school will be used as a college in the film where Shah Rukh will act as a teacher. “There is also a sequence in which the superstar climbs on the roof-top of the school and will be rescued by a helicopter,” said one of them.
