City dacoity mastermind arrested

Calcutta, Nov. 27: The mastermind of the recent robbery attempt at a house on Shakespeare Sarani was arrested last night from a remote pocket in Joynagar of South 24-Parganas.

During interrogation today, Amar Mallik confessed that he had led the 16-member gang to rob the residence of Naimuddin Siddiqui, who had opened fire with his 14-year-old son, Izaz Ahmed, from their licensed guns as soon as they noticed the dacoits.

“As soon as we stormed into the businessman’s house through an emergency-gate, bullets started coming at us from two directions. I asked my associates to flee,” said Mallik.

“Initially, Mallik tried to resist. Even the villagers began throwing stones at the police,” Soumen Mitra, deputy commissioner of police (detective department) said of the arrest.

“One of the inspectors then aired a false message to the officer-in-charge of a police station. Mallik’s followers panicked, the villagers fled,” he added.
