Scribes face anti-Bangla charges

Dhaka, Nov. 26 (Reuters): Bangladesh authorities have detained two journalists working on a British television documentary on terrorism and they may be charged with “anti-Bangladesh activities”, officials said today.

Police said Zaiba Malik, 35, and Bruno Sorrentino, 40, were detained by immigration officials at Bangladesh’s western Benapole border yesterday and later handed over to police.

They were in Bangladesh to shoot a documentary called Unreported World for Channel 4. Police said Malik held a British passport and Sorrentino was Italian. A Channel 4 spokesperson in London said Malik was a producer/reporter and Sorrentino a director/camerman.

Interior ministry officials said the journalists were apparently seeking to portray Bangladesh as an Islamic fundamentalist country linked to terror. “They are in police custody now and will possibly face charges of anti-Bangladesh activities,” a police officer said.
