Equipment snag stalls Sealdah trains

Train services were disrupted for a few hours on Sunday afternoon on Eastern Railway’s Sealdah South section when a pantograph came apart at Champahati station. A Sealdah-bound Canning local was detained at Champahati by angry passengers, which resulted in a clash with railway employees. The train was released in the evening.

Water mains split by flyover

A large pocket in the Park Street-Kyd Street belt was flooded on Sunday with filtered water as a 12-inch underground water mains was smashed during piling work for construction of the proposed Park Street flyover near Kyd Street. The contractor started piling on the water main, according to mayor-in-council (water supply) member Sovan Chatterjee.

NCC anniversary

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) observed its 54th anniversary on Sunday morning on the Brigade Parade Ground. State higher education minister Satyasadhan Chakraborty and NCC deputy director Brigadier Rakesh Mehta were present. The minister took the salute during the march past.

New port office

Jyoti Basu will inaugurate Krishnapada Ghose Bhavan on November 27. This is the new office building of the Calcutta Port and Shore Mazdoor Union. Shyamal Chakraborty, president of the union, will be present.

Scuffle arrest

A hawker was arrested for stabbing a shopkeeper in the palm during a scuffle at Hatibagan on Saturday.

Hawker Sangram Samiti took out a procession to mark the sixth anniversary of Operation Sunshine from Subodh Mullick Square on Sunday afternoon.
