Voice against violence

Today is an important date on the world calendar: it is the International Day Protesting Violence Against Women. Beginning today, Swayam, a city-based NGO working against violence on women, will observe the International Fortnight Protesting Violence against Women with a series of programmes to sensitise people on this burning issue. The series of programmes include a poster exhibition: Half the Sky, to be inaugurated today at Park Circus Maidan at 2 pm. This will be followed by Jhankar — Breaking the Silence Surrounding Violence — a music concert by school bands on November 30 at G.D. Birla Sabhagar, 3 pm. Pratibimb — Reflections of Reality — a film festival on women’s issues will be held between December 2 and 5 and December 7 at Max Mueller Bhavan and The Seagull Foundation for the Arts. On December 8, a rally on wheels: Sankalp — Towards a Violence-free World — will begin from Shahid Minar at 9.30 am. Also, workshops with college students and rural women of East Midnapore, Antara Gram, Baruipur, Pailan, Bede Bustee (Brace Bridge) involved in self-help groups, story sharing session et al are on the cards.The progranmme concludes on December 10, International Human Rights Day.
