Two dead, 7 hurt in mishaps

A woman and a child were killed and seven others injured in a series of accidents on Saturday.

The first incident happened at around 6.30 am on Khagen Chatterjee Street, in the Chitpur police station area. The child, identified as Rohit Rajak, 2, died after being hit by a speeding cement truck while crossing the road, the police said. Locals rushed him to R.G. Kar Hospital where he was declared dead. The driver fled but the vehicle was impounded.

As news of the accident spread, residents staged a demonstration. Later, senior officials from Chitpore police station rushed to the spot and pacified the agitators.

In another incident, Chintamoyee Devi, 55, was killed when a taxi coming out from Sealdah railway station knocked her down in front of BR Singh Hospital at 6.35 am. She succumbed to her injuries on the way to Nilratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital. Another woman, Phoolmati Devi, received leg injuries when the killer taxi hit her too. She was taken to the hospital where her condition was stated to be stable.

Four persons travelling in a Maruti van were injured when a private bus on route 17B dashed into it in front of the Gandhi Statue at 9.15 am. All the injured, including a seven-year-old girl, were admitted to SSKM Hospital. The police seized the bus but the driver escaped. Two persons received head injuries when a taxi mounted a pavement on Camac Street. One of them was identified as Debasish Saha, while the other one was unconscious till late on Saturday.
