IFA eyeing Taejon Citizen

The IFA is planning to bring South Korean first division team Taejon Citizen and South Africa’s Manning Rangers for the IFA Shield scheduled from January 8 t0 20, 2003. The IFA will approach Taejon when they arrive in the city for the AFC Champions League, return leg match, against Mohun Bagan.

Apart from four city teams — East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Tollygunge Agragami and Mohammedan Sporting — Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting and Mahindra United have confirmed participation. One of either Vasco or Churchill will also take part in the nine-team tournament. If talks with Manning Rangers fall through, IFA have Central Asia’s Pakhtakor in mind.

Floodlit tennis

Ragini Vimal, Mohana Sarkar, Dipti Srivastava and Shivika Burman moved into the quarter finals of the girls’ under-18 singles category in the Saturday Club floodlit tennis tournament on Wednesday.

Agarpara Mahajati Vidhyapith walloped Central State Welfare Home 9-1 in the championship rounds of the Peerless Trophy inter-school football meet on Wednesday. Tanmoy Basunia scored a hattrick for the winners.

Veterans’ TT

A table tennis meet for veteran players will be held by Bengal Veteran Table Tennis Players’ Association on December 8 at ITC Hall, Salt Lake. The meet will be for men and women above 40 years.

University meet

Calcutta University thrashed Chapra JPU by nine wickets while Rabindra Bharati University edge through Purvachal University by 19 runs in the east zone inter-university cricket meet on Wednesday.
