New Delhi, Nov. 18: The BJP has cleared the names of 135 of the 187 candidates for the Gujarat polls. The list is expected to be released tomorrow.
The exercise was done in a meeting of the central election committee held at the residence of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and chief minister Narendra Modi were among those present.
Sources stressed the process was done in a “spirit of unanimity” but refused to divulge the names of the candidates. It is also unclear where Modi would contest from although there was speculation he may do it from two places—Rajkot II, his present constituency, and another in the tribal belt of Sabarkanta which was hit by riots.

The remaining 52 names are expected to be finalised tomorrow evening. The first list will also be released tomorrow.
The election committee meeting was followed by an informal sitting at Advani’s residence which was attended by the core group of strategists including Mahajan, Naidu, Jaitley and Modi. Sources said the campaign issues were discussed and a tentative tour schedule of the leaders was worked out. It was also decided that immediately after he returned to Gandhinagar, Modi would resume the last leg of his gaurav yatra which will cover Sabarkanta, untraversed so far and the cities of Vadodara and Ahmedabad.
