Midnight’s trouble

London, Nov. 18 (PTI): NRI television actress Nina Wadia has walked out of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s current flagship stage project, an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s novel Midnight’s Children.

Wadia, of Goodness Gracious Me fame, was unveiled last month in a deal heralded as a breakthrough for Black and Asian actors. “She quit quite unexpectedly,” a spokesman of rsc said today. “It is disappointing, and it’s not clear why she left. Perhaps money was a factor.”

Midnight’s Children was due to premiere at the Barbican in January, before going on tour of the US and back in the UK.

Wadia’s agent said: “Nina felt unable to commit to the long and complicated rehearsal process.”
