Widow pays for remarriage

Patna, Nov. 16: Thirty-two-year-old Asha Devi had to pay the price for marrying again, reports our special correspondent.

She was tonsured and paraded for her sin in Majhauwa village under Bagha police station in West Champaran district of Bihar, about 180 km from here.

Devi had entered into a fresh wedlock with Bhikari Mahato last month after remaining a widow for a year. Her husband, Bhikari Mahato, is a widower.

However, the panchayat branded the marriage immoral last week and excommunicated the widow.

Villagers, who were not satisfied, detained the couple on Wednesday, tonsured Devi and paraded her in the village.

The couple has moved the local court for protection.
