Gagan Ajit in shortlist

Chennai: India’s nippy forward Gagan Ajit Singh figures on top of a list of a dozen crack hockey players in the world for the international hockey federation (FIH) award as the ‘Best Young Player of the Year 2002’, while the mercurial Dhanraj Pillay has been nominated for the ‘Player of the Year’ award.

Apart from Gagan Ajit, another forward Prabhjot Singh, is also in the list for the ‘Young Player of the Year’ award.

A press release from Steven Morris, marketing and communication manager, FIH, the world body for the game, said the panel members would determine the winner by a secret ballot.

The first, second and third choices would carry 10, five and two points respectively. The winners of the awards for men, young (men) and women players of the year would be announced at an open press reception in Perth December 5.

A separate panel, comprising journalists and coaches, who were present in FIH women competitions during the year, were appointed as selectors.
