Meenakshi, Aparna exit

Bangkok: Chinese shuttlers dominated the opening day of the Asian badminton championships here Wednesday with top seed world No. 4 Zhou Mi defeating Indian qualifier B. R. Meenakshi 11-5, 11-7 in the womenís singles preliminary round.

Indiaís top women player, Aparna Popat, also went down to seventh seed Kaori Mori of China 11-5, 10-13, 11-14 in the opening round.

However, in the menís section, Chetan Anand defeating Jakkaphan Thanatheeratham of Thailand 15-5, 15-11.

Zhou will now take on unseeded Japanese Eriko Hirose who had little problem disposing of Taiwanese Chen Wan Ju 11-3, 11-5.

Zhou is expected to face no difficulty in overcoming Hirose, but is likely to face a hard-fought quarter final match against sixth seeded Ling Wan Ting of Hong Kong on Friday.

Ling beat Indonesian Ellen Angelina 11-9, 2-11, 11-6.

Reigning champion Zhang Ning of China survived a stiff challenge from Taiwanese Cheng Shao Chieh to win 11-9, 11-0.
