Patil leads after seventh round

Calcutta, Nov. 9: Sirish Patil of Maharashtra was leading with 6.5 points after the seventh and penultimate round of the national chess championship for the visually handicapped being hosted by Louis Braille Memorial School for the Sightless in Uttarpara. Bengal’s Dibakar Pal was in the second spot with six points.

Varsity cricket

Calcutta University will meet North Bengal University in Sunday’s final of the inter-university cricket for the Ajoy Ghosh Trophy being played in Kalyani. In Saturday’s action, Calcutta University beat Jadavpur by 68 runs, while North Bengal edged IIT Kharagpur by a solitary run.

Bengal 97 all out

The Bengal under-17 team was all out for 97 in the first innings of the three-day tie against their Bangladesh counterparts at the FD Block ground. Bangladesh were 117 for eight at stumps. The Bangladesh coach initially refused to field his team citing bad pitch conditions. CAB officials persuaded him to play.
