Two youths held for firing on trader

lThe Lake Town police arrested Ashok Yadav and Babai on charges of shooting Brajesh Prasad near Patipukur on Wednesday afternoon. Prasad was shot while he was on his way home after closing his shop in Belgachhia. Five youths accosted him and opened fire. Police said Prasad’s condition is currently stable and he is recuperating in a city nursing home.

Man run over in Cossipore

A 50-year-old man was run over by a minibus in Cossipore on Wednesday morning. Police said he was walking down the pavement when the bus, in a bid to overtake a private car, hit him. He died on the spot. Police said the driver of the bus was arrested and the vehicle seized by the Cossipore police.

Burn deaths

Dilip and his wife Nisha, who were admitted to Nilratan Sirkar Medical College and Hospital after a fire broke out in their house on Suri Lane last week, died on Wednesday, DC, central, Zulfiquar Hasan said. Seven persons had suffered severe burn injuries after a stove burst. A two-year-old boy and a one-and-half-year-old girl had earlier died in hospital.

BJP brotherhood

Members of the BJP women’s wing organised bhai phonta on Wednesday for civil aviation minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, Muzzafar Khan and other senior leaders at the party office. Hussain was in the city for a day and he left in the evening.

Bus owners’ protest

Private bus and minibus owners will demonstrate at Subodh Mullick Square on November 8 to protest frequent hikes in prices of diesel and petrol over the past few weeks. They will submit a memorandum to the Governor, according to a press release issued by the Joint Council of Bus Syndicates.

Puja tour

The India Tourism Development Corporation has arranged for Jagaddhatri Puja tours to Chandernagore as part of its Discovery of Bangla Festival. The tours will start at the ITDC city office on Chowringhee Road at 12 noon on November 11 and 12 and terminate at Esplanade at 10 pm.


Eastern Railway will felicitate Soma Biswas and Saraswati Saha, gold medal winners in the recently-concluded Asian Games in Korea-Japan, along with other sportspersons at a programme at the ER tent on the Maidan on Thursday. ER general manager Sunil Sengupta will be present.

Equipment on view

An exhibition in promoting latest equipment in the instrumentation industry will be on display from November 12 to 14 at Ice Skating Rink. Nearly 50 stalls with exhibitors from all over the country will participate, along with research groups and educational institutions.
