Cops held for trader assault

Two constables of Bidhannagar (South) police station were arrested on Monday on charges of assaulting businessman Saket Anand and snatching a gold chain from him. On a complaint by Anand, the constables were suspended immediately.

M. Harisena Verma, superintendent of police, North 24-Parganas district, said an investigation was initiated against Mrityunjoy Adhikary and Deepak Barua, the accused cops. Anand said in his complaint that a group of policemen intercepted his Maruti van early on Sunday, while he was returning from a nursing home, where his grandmother was admitted. “When I pulled up, the two constables got off the jeep and started beating me up. They snatched my gold chain, too,” Anand said. The pendant on Anand’s chain was later recovered from the spot.
