Howrah enteric toll up to five

With one more death reported on Thursday morning, the enteric toll has risen to five in the Howrah Municipal Corporation area in the past seven days. More than 300 people had to be admitted to Howrah General Hospital.

According to minister of state for health Protyush Mukherjee, the worst-affected areas are Shibpur, Golabari and Nayabustee. Leaks in the pipeline of the Padmapukur water project has reportedly caused the disease. The corporation has been asked to initiate immediate remedial measures. Water samples have been sent to the School of Tropical Medicine (STM) and the Central Combined Laboratory for tests.

A special ward has been opened at the hospital for enteric diseases. The health department has asked private nursing homes to inform the corporation about enteric patients taking admission.
