India confirm berth in quarter finals

Calcutta: India have qualified for the quarter finals of the Asian under-20 championship despite losing 0-4 to Saudi Arabia in their third and final match in group B in Doha on Tuesday.

According to information received here, the Indians moved up as one of the two better third-placed teams in the 12-team three-group field. Qatar and China are fighting for the other better third-placed teamís slot.

The other teams to have made the quarters are South Korea and Uzbekistan (group A), Japan and Saudi Arabia (group B), Syria and UAE (group C).

India, who beat Bangladesh 6-0 and lost 1-2 to Japan earlier, were expected to return a better scoreline. But even in defeat, Islam Akhmedovís boys were not disgraced.

Despite losing a defender for a fierce tackle on Saudiís Abodh Autef in the first minute, India refused to surrender and forced a few scoring chances. Japan, who had beaten Saudi Arabia 2-1, beat Bangladesh 3-0 in their final match to top the group with an all-win record.
