Theft slur drives man to death

A 55-year-old man committed suicide by consuming acid early on Tuesday at Beniapukur. He had been accused of stealing electrical wires and beaten up in front of his neighbours.

His relatives admitted him to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital where he died. Three persons, including the wife of the main accused, were arrested for abetment to commit suicide. The main accused is absconding.

According to police, Md Aslam was constructing a house on Crematorium Road. He engaged Pesra, the victim, to guard the construction goods stored in front of the house. On Monday, the electrical wires were missing. He blamed Pesra for stealing the wires and slapped him. Pesra, a resident of a nearby slum, locked himself in his room and consumed acid.
