Smashan Swapan held

Crimelord Smashan Swapan was picked up from Patipukur on Saturday afternoon.

Acting on a tip-off, officers of the detective department raided a hideout and netted the criminal. Officers of the Munchipara police station had arrested Swapan two months ago, but he had obtained bail recently. Police said they were looking for the gangster in connection with a shoot-out that occurred in the Tollygunge area in September.

Smashan Swapan gained his name and notoriety at the funeral of film-maker Satyajit Ray where he had publicly addressed police commissioner Biren Saha as “Sahada”. The proof of proximity with the goon cost Saha his chair.

nMan run over: A 65-year-old man died after being hit by a Maruti van at Jorabagan on Saturday night. Police said the accident occurred when Nafar Dharpati, the victim, was trying to cross the road. The driver fled leaving behind his vehicle, which was later impounded.
