Twin mishaps claim 5 youths

Five people died in two road mishaps in the city on Tuesday.

Police said four youths were run over on AJC Bose Road, while another died near Deshapriya Park in south Calcutta.

Bystanders said a group of seven people, who had come to the town from Dankuni in Hooghly for pandal-hopping, were waiting to cross the road near the Sealdah flyover. Sunil Roy, 20, Dinesh Prajapati, 20, Babusona Garai, 20, and Buro Das, 19, ran across the road all of a sudden. “They did not notice the bus on route 217, which hit them when they were on the middle of the road,” a passerby said. The victims were taken to Nil Ratan Sirkar Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead. The bus is still untraceable.

In another incident, Surajit Gupta, 28,was crushed to death near Deshapriya Park. Police said Gupta slipped off a Babughat-bound truck and was run over by another truck. He was declared dead at Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan.
