China unhappy with showing

Busan, Oct. 14 (Reuters): China’s dominant performance in the Asian Games was “good training” for the next Olympics, but many Chinese athletes performed below world standards at Busan, a senior sports official said on Monday.

Li Furong, a Chinese Olympic Committee vice president, mixed praise for a string of world records in weightlifting and a clean doping record at the Busan Games with a stern assessment of prospects for Athens in 2004. The key figure in the world’s last great socialist sports programme said China’s athletes must not be content with winning more than one-third of the 419 golds on offer.
