Radcliffe smashes world mark

Chicago: Britain’s Paula Radcliffe won the women’s race at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday in a world record time of 2::17:18 seconds.

Radcliffe destroyed by nearly a minute and a half the old record set at 2::18:47 by Catherine Ndereba of Kenya in last year’s race. Ndereba had to settle for second best this time, trailing in at 2::19:25.

There had been hopes of a world record in the men’s race as well but Khalid Khannouchi’s 2::05:56 was 18 seconds outside the mark set by the Moroccan-born American at the London Marathon in April.

Daniel Njenga of Kenya and Toshinari Takaoka of Japan finished second in the same time on 2::06:16 with Paul Tergat of Kenya two seconds behind them.

Radcliffe, who won the London Marathon, said: “I was really surprised how much support there was for me. There were so many British flags.”
