Tada accused kin held for murder bid

The 21-year-old son of Rashid Khan — one of the Tada convicts held in the 1992 Bowbazar explosion case — was picked up on Saturday. Police have booked Farid, the accused, under Section 307 of IPC for attempt to murder. He has been remanded in police custody till October 14.

In a complaint lodged with the Bowbazar police on Friday, a central Calcutta trader said that Farid and his accomplices had raided his cold-drink shop on BB Ganguly Street a few days ago and demanded money from him.

According to Zulfiquar Hasan, deputy commissioner, central division, Farid and his aides would regularly extort local traders. “Last Thursday, he and one of his associates had attacked the trader with a razor,” Hasan said. The trader was admitted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital with multiple injuries. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Bowbazar police station tracked Farid down in a house on Colootola Street around 4 am on Saturday. “During interrogation, Farid provided information on his associate as well,” Hasan added.
