Landlord held for tenant assault

lA landlord was arrested on Friday from Barabagan in Kasba for beating up a tenant and forcing him and his family to leave the house on N.K. Ghosal Road. The tenant, Dibyendu Chatterjee, was forced by the landlord, named Gobra, to vacate the house with his wife and two children on Wednesday night. Police are now looking for Gobra’s associates who forced the Chatterjees out of the house.

Part I results on Monday

The results of B.A. and B.Sc (Part-I) examinations conducted by Calcutta University in 2002 are going to be published on October 7.

Puja Specials

The first Puja Special from Howrah to Dehra Dun (233 Up) left Howrah at 2.05 pm on Friday. The train consisted of 13 coaches, including one AC two-tier, one AC three-tier, seven sleeper coaches, two general second class and two second class-cum-luggage vans. Eastern Railway will run a record 100 Puja specials this season. Among them, 33 pairs will run between Howrah and New Delhi, 10 pairs between Howrah and Dehra Dun, 16 pairs each between Howrah and Gorakhpur and Howrah and Bikaner, and 25 pairs between Sealdah and New Jalpaiguri. These Puja Specials will run till the end of November.

CMC drainage team

The CMC drainage department has decided not to withdraw its special arrangements for monsoon till Lakshmi Puja in view of “the uncertain weather condition”. According to member, mayor-in-council, drainage and sewerage, Rajib Deb, a team of civic engineers will remain on duty during the Pujas to tackle water-logging problems in the city’s low-lying areas.

Jet Airways flights

Jet Airways will operate a 122-seater Boeing 737-700 flight on the Calcutta-Bagdogra sector on October 11, 14 and 21. This will be in addition to the scheduled operation of the flight 9W 617/618 on the Calcutta-Bagdogra-Calcutta route on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The additional Boeing 737 flight 9W 617/618 on the Calcutta-Bagdogra-Calcutta sector on Fridays and Mondays will leave Calcutta at 12.15 pm and reach Bagdogra at 1.15 pm, depart from Bagdogra at 1.45 pm and arrive at Calcutta at 2.45 pm. Jet Airways will provide direct connection on the Calcutta-Bagdogra-Calcutta route for five days from October 11 and for three days from October 19, a spokesperson said.

Eviction drive

Shanties on the pavement along Prince Anwar Shah Road were demolished on Friday by a joint team from the Jadavpur police station and the Corporation. Officials said the demolition was part of a pre-puja clean-up drive.


B.M. Moitra, former employee of IOC, was inadvertently reported as having died in the article ‘Pension plea by former oil company employees’ in Metro dated October 3. He is presently residing in Kasba. The error is regretted.
