Suicide bid over bonus

Threatened by a workers’ agitation over Puja bonus, the 59-year-old owner of a grill-manufacturing unit attempted suicide by jumping off the roof of his three-storeyed house on Swinhoe Street, early on Thursday. His family rushed him to Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan, where he is under observation. His right hand had been ripped off in the suicide bid.

Sources said Prafulla Roy, the businessman, was going through a financial crisis. “Monetary problems, fuelled by an impending strike at his Chanditala unit, had depressed Roy,” said an officer of Gariahat police station.

Thursday’s incident took place around 4 am. When his family found Roy missing from the bedroom, they looked around the apartment. A little later, they found him lying on the ground, bleeding. Soumen Mitra, deputy commissioner, detective department, said when Roy told his workers that he would not be able to pay them bonus, they threatened a ceasework, which forced Roy to contemplate suicide.
