Pirates free boy after ransom

Gosaba, Sept. 30: A 10-year-old boy kidnapped by pirates from Satkhira in Bangladesh was released here today after his parents paid a ransom of more than Rs 1 lakh, police said.

However, one of the pirates was arrested later in the day.

Initially, the South 24-Parganas police were “indifferent” towards the kidnap. They swung into action only after minor irrigation minister Ganesh Chandra Mondal intervened.

According to the police, Tapan Mondal was picked up by the pirates from Kalinchi village in the Shyamnagar police station area in Bangladesh on Friday. His father Rabindra Nath Mondal, a businessman, came to know that the kidnappers had slipped into Bengal.

Rabindra Nath approached Ganesh Chandra yesterday and requested for help.

Officer in-charge of Gosaba Ratan Pal said the information on the kidnap had come through the BSF. There was no confirmation on the ransom amount.
