Iran thrash Afghans 10-0

Busan, Sept. 28 (Reuters): There were contrasting fortunes for North Korea and Afghanistan as both countries embarked on a new era in international competition in the Asian Games football meet on Saturday.

North Korea beat Hong Kong 2-1 in their group F opener thanks to an 82nd minute winner from striker Hong Yong-jo. But Afghanistan mounted little resistance against defending champions Iran and were hammered 0-10 on their first appearance at the Games since Hiroshima in 1994. Alireza Vahedi Nikbakht scored five and Ali Daei, as a substitute, netted a brace in the goal rush.

In other matches, Tatsuya Tanaka and Yuichi Nemoto gave Japan a 2-0 win over Palestine in group D; Bahrain ran out 3-0 winners over Uzbekistan; Lebanon salvaged a 1-1 draw with Qatar in group E and while Kuwait thrashed Pakistan 6-0 in group F.
