Govt mulls ISI mark for tea

New Delhi, Sept. 24 (PTI): Close on the heels of introducing quality mark for sugar, the government now plans to bring in ISI certification for tea. The move aims at improving realisation for tea growers and companies even as consumers are provided with high quality certified produce.

“The Indian standard for tea has been revised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in consultation with the ministry of commerce, Tea Board and the industry which will be printed shortly,” consumer affairs minister Sharad Yadav said.

He said dialogue has also been initiated with Agmark for ISI certification adding their consent is necessary since tea is covered by the Agmark scheme.

On the request of the commerce ministry, BIS is also formulating two more standards, one each for green and instant tea, he added.
