More fall ill from drain water

Barasat, Sept. 24: At least 30 more people were taken ill and admitted to the Barasat district hospital in North 24-Parganas today after drinking contaminated water.

The outbreak of gastro enteritis across wards 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30 of the Barasat Municipality had claimed about 200 people ill over the past two days.

However, unconfirmed sources said nearly 500 people more, including women and children, were admitted to the hospital from the five wards till late this evening.

An eight-member team comprising two additional directors of health services is camping in the area. Two city-based NGOs and the municipality have set up four makeshift medical camps in the hospital premises to provide first aid.

Preliminary investigations had revealed that a leakage in the municipality’s water pipeline and the seepage of drain water had led to the outbreak.
