CPM-Cong clash claims 3

Bhagabangola, Sept. 23: Three persons were killed at Hossainagar village near here this morning as supporters of the Congress and the CPM clashed over the control of a jetty.

The CPM claimed two of the dead — Hasibul Sheikh, 35, and Sahid Ali, 70 — were its supporters. Peshennoor Bewa, 45, the lone woman killed today, was said to be a Congress supporter. Among the injured were a dozen CPM cadre and a Congress activist.

Sub-divisional police officer Subrata Mitra said the clash broke out over control of the Palasbati jetty. “Both sides used arms and burst bombs,” Mitra said.

The CPM and the Congress blamed each other for the clash.
