Salkia, Aryan in group A

Salkia Friends emerged champions in the Calcutta Football League’s first division group B. In their championship play-off final at the Mohammedan Sporting ground Saturday they beat Aryan 1-0.

As the top two of the group both teams have moved into group A, a notch below the Super Division.

The goal came late in the first half when a defender was hauled up by referee Samir Chakraborty for deliberately handling the ball in the penalty box. Pravash Ghosh converted the penalty.

The day’s lone group A tie — a championship play-off quarter final between Milan Bithee and Wari — could not be completed due to bad light. The teams were goalless in regulation time and went into extra time play in which the first half was goalless. The match will be held later. From this year four teams from group A will move into the Super Division.

Budding race star

Veteran rallyist Arindam Ghosh’s son Amittrajit Ghosh, after an impressive first round in the JK Tyre National Racing championship of Formula India Single Seater Maruti Engine (FISSME) race in Sri Perumbudur, Chennai recently, is preparing for a next three rounds. His aim is to get an Asian circuit exemption entry.

Ghosh finished 10th in the round, having qualified 13th, in the 19 FISSME car field at the Madras Motor Sports Club. He damaged his car in a practice session, resulting in time lost later. These cars have stock 800cc Maruti engines, with a stripped down chassis and body. They are 320kg kerb weight cars, and a barely three-day practice session was what the only Calcutta entrant had with them. “I aim for the Asian circuit from where I can grab sponsors. So far, it has all been family money,” said Amittrajit Saturday.

Meanwhile Arindam is launching a “race management” firm, a la a south Indian company, “to provide professional support to race/rally events around the country.”

Children’s chess

Joydeep Dutta, Debayan Majumdar and Saurav Chakraborty shared the lead in under-14 category of the ETV rapid chess meet, held at Alekhine Chess Club on Saturday. Sandipan Chatterjee was the lone leader in under-10 section.
