Teachers’ pay

New Delhi, Sept. 19 (PTI): Nearly 2,000 college teachers will get a raise with the Union Cabinet giving its approval to the upgradation of payscales of professors and readers under the merit promotion scheme effective from January 1, 1996.

The ex-post-facto approval, aimed at removing anomalies in the payscales, will cost the exchequer Rs 7 crore annually.

The Cabinet approved the hike in payscales of professors to Rs 16400-22400 from Rs 4500-7300. The upgraded revised payscales for readers has been fixed at Rs 12,000-420-18,300.

But the non-Ph.D will have an option either to forgo the higher payscale if they wish to retain the designation of reader or get their designation changed to lecturer (selection grade) with the payscale of Rs 12,000-18,300.

Fixation of the pay of lecturer (selection grade)/readers under the scheme at the minimum of Rs 14,940 in the scale of Rs 12,000-420-18,300 has been extended to the lecturers (selection grade)/readers under the career advancement scheme.
