700 for inter-zonal athletics

Calcutta: Bengal’s Susmita Singha Roy will lead the East Zone girls squad in the 14th national inter zonal athletics meet at Salt Lake Stadium and SAI complex from Monday.

Almost 700 athletes will take part from four zones in 140 events during the three-day meet. North Zone are the defending champions while East finished runner-up last season.

The championships — organised by Amateur Athletic Association of West Bengal — will form the basis of selection for the Indian squad to the Asian junior track and field meet in Bangkok.

The juniors had performed well in their last international engagement — the Malaysian Open — winning two golds and five silvers. The Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI) will have dope testing and photo finish facilities during the championships. The samples collected for dope testing will be sent to Delhi for verification.
