Fine opening by Islam

Calcutta: Patna’s Mohammed Islam stole the honours on Day One of the Rs 6 lakh Hyundai Open at the par-70 Madras Gymkhana Club course Wednesday.

According to information received here, Islam led the quality field with a score of three-under 67 and also shot a hole-in-one.

He secured a one-stroke lead over Rohtas Singh (Delhi), Vikramjit Singh (Chandigarh) and Monish Bindra (Delhi).

Mukesh Kumar and Firoz Ali returned identical scores of one-under 69. Twice winner this season and Order of Merit leader Digvijay Singh went one-over 71.

After missing birdies on the second and third holes, Islam finally sank one on the par-three fourth after landing four feet from the pin.

He hit bad second shots on the sixth and ninth hole to bogey them and finished his outward journey at one-over. His back nine was bogey-free.
