The bodies of nine passengers, killed in Friday’s mishap near Suri town, were handed over to the family members by the district administration on Saturday. The deaths occurred after a goods train rammed into a bus carrying pilgrims to Kalighat at a level-crossing.
District magistrate of Birbhum Barun Roy arranged for the bodies to be taken to Vaishali in Bihar, from where most pilgrims came. Roy informed his counterpart in Bihar about the condition of the injured.
Hospital sources said the injured have been admitted to Suri Sadar hospital, where they were recuperating. “We shall release some of the pilgrims who are showing signs of improvement,” sources said. Anxious relatives from remote villages in Bihar have been camping on the hospital premises since Friday.
A hunt is on to locate the driver of the bus. “He has been absconding since the accident,” said an officer.
