Twin suicides at hospital

Calcutta, Sept. 6: The beleaguered government-run hospitals in Bengal suffered another blow today with two suicides and a mob rampage rocking the Medical College and Hospital.

Two patients committed suicide in a span of three hours on the hospital campus. Dipak Mahato (27) from Murshidabad hanged himself in the bathroom of the ENT ward of the hospital. He was depressed after being detected with cancer.

Rehana Khatun (16) hanged herself from the railing of her bed on the top floor of the School of Tropical Medicine on the same campus. The girl, who hails from Mathurapur in South 24-Parganas, had been diagnosed HIV positive.

Rehana, who used a ribbon to hang herself around 5 pm, had an altercation with her mother, hospital sources said.

Late at night, a mob from Baithakkhana Road in Sealdah stormed the emergency ward of the hospital and assaulted doctors following the death of a teenager.

Sixteeen-year-old Prakash Rajbanshi was admitted to the hospital in the evening after he fell from a roof while flying a kite. People from the neighbourhood went on the rampage at the hospital alleging negligence by the staff. A hospital employee was injured.

Doctors alleged that the attack occurred in the presence of policemen. However, police said the mob outnumbered the three men on duty at the hospital.
