Faulty pumps on Boeing jets

Singapore, Aug. 31 (Reuters): Asian airlines said today they were carrying out checks after US regulators warned some 3,000 Boeing aircraft could be fitted with fuel pumps potentially capable of triggering an explosion.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency directive to US carriers yesterday urging them to make immediate checks on more than 1,400 Boeing aircraft to see if they were fitted with the fuel pumps. It fears the pumps could cause a fire or an explosion if the fuel tanks run dry.
