Saptarshi in five-way lead

Five players were leading the field with four points after the fourth round of the WBCA-organised Fide rated chess meet at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra Friday. City boy Saptarshi Roy was in the leading pack following a win over D.P. Singh (3).

Others on four points are GM-elect G.B. Prakash, Sundar Rajan Kidambi, Akash Thakur and Ramprakash. Prakash beat Santosh Kumar Sinha (3), Kidambi defeated Swapan Mitra (3), Thakur upset Yogesh Gore (3), while Ramprakash overcame S. Kutwal.

Advani makes semi-final

Pankaj Advani of India beat Australia’s James Mifaud 6-5 to enter the semi-final of the world under-21 snooker competition being played in Riga, Latvia. According to information received here, Advani became the second Indian after Manan Chandra to reach this stage of this championship. Chandra had reached the last-four in Cairo in 1999. Advani faces David John of Wales for a place in the final.

Pankaj won the first two frames, but Milfaud fought back and both players were eventually tied at 5-all. However, the Indian No. 1 won the 11th frame easily to settle the issue.

4th div. soccer

North Entally UTS and Rashbehari ABM moved into the finals of the fourth division championship play-off final. Both teams have now qualified for the third division. In the semi-finals, Rashbehari beat Beleghata BB 2-0, while North Entally pipped Beleghata AC 4-2 in the penalty shootout after both sides failed to score in regular time. Meanwhile, Rashbehari’s Goutam Ghosh was sent off.

Merchants’ Cup

Williamson Magor beat SWIL 3-0 to reach the quarter finals of the Merchants’ Cup darts competition.

Other results: Indian Fishing Line bt Nippo 3-0; Royal Ocean bt Bothra Ford 3-2; Ashok Transport bt Calcutta Chemicals 3-0; Shaw Wallace bt Hindustan Lever 3-1.

Indoor cricket

Pioneer Polyfab will clash with Tata Steel in the Main Plate final of the Space Circle corporate indoor cricket meet Saturday.

In Friday’s semi-final, Pioneer (103) beat HSBC (66) by 37 runs. ITC (98) had beaten BOC India (74) by 24 runs in Thursday’s semi-final.
