Gangrape victim faces threats

Meerawali (Pakistan), Aug. 30 (Reuters): Hours before the verdict in a high-profile gangrape trial in Pakistan in which 14 men face the death penalty, the victim said she had been threatened with revenge if they were convicted.

Thirty-year-old divorcee Mukhtaran Mai told Reuters rival tribespeople had threatened to kill members of her family if their relatives were convicted in tomorrow’s ruling and appealed to the government for a safer place to live.

“We are receiving death threats,” she said at her home in the small Punjab village of Meerawali, where she says she was raped by four men from a rival clan on June 22 with the assent of a traditional village jury, or panchayat.
