Arrests foil dacoity bid

The police foiled a major dacoity attempt with the arrest of four armed youths from Jadavpur on Tuesday. The youths — identified as Birju Nair, alias Deepak, Raju Das, alias Joy, Raj Kumar Chakraborty and Amit — were close aides of Tarak Chhetri, a local goon who had been rounded up from Manoharpukur Road on Sunday.

Jadavpur police were tipped off that the gang would gather near Sandhya Bazaar early on Tuesday. Accordingly, a police team surrounded the area and picked up the youths.

A revolver, country-made guns and live cartridges were found on them. “All four admitted that they had assembled there to raid a house. The youths were wanted in connection with dacoities, robberies and snatchings,” said Jadavpur thana officer-in-charge Salil Bhattacharya.

According to police, after Chhetri went behind bars, his associates would extort money from businessmen and often assault those who failed to pay up.
