New tech for speak & surf

New Delhi, Aug. 27: TouchTel — the fixed line operator — launched its new service that offers simultaneous use of telephone connection for both telephony and net surfing using a technology called asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL).

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd will soon offer the same speak-as-you-surf service even as a move is afoot to harness a new technology called CoreDect that uses airwaves to communicate voice and transfer of data.

CoreDect is a technology that works in 1800 megahertz to 1900 megahertz spectrum. Pilot projects of BSNL are in the final stages in Kuppam district of Andhra Pradesh, Karpuram in Karnataka. It is also being used by N-Log, a private internet service operator in Mellur in Tamil Nadu, and Shyam Telelink, a private fixed line operator.

This technology can also offer access speeds that go beyond those promised by both ISDN (integrated services digital network) and ‘cable modems’ hooked up to cable television lines.

Shirish Purohit, director of Midas Communications of Chennai, says, “We have tested the surfing and telephone using CoreDect technology. The ISP operator in Madurai has connected 70 villages using this technology. A speed of a minimum of 35 kilobits per second to a maximum of 70 kbps can be offered. We are also in advanced stages of formalising a speed that can offer 384 kbps.”

The company in association with IIT Madras has been the pioneer in evolution of this technology. “We have successfully established the performance of our products and the technology in Egypt, Tunisia and Iran,” added Purohit.

Meanwhile, TouchTel, the fixed line service provider in Delhi, claimed that the service based on the ADSL will be revolution in the internet experience.

Explaining the benefits of the service, Rohtash Mal, CEO, TouchTel, Delhi, said, “Zipnet is a broadband internet / data access technology riding on the state-of-the-art copper and fibre based network. It is the most convenient and reliable way to stay connected. Unlike other cumbersome modes of internet access, Zipnet allows the freedom to talk while one surfs.”

He added, “Users can run applications like video conferencing, video streaming, downloading songs, movies on demand and net meetings. Zipnet is technologically future-ready and ushers in a step forward in the era of convergence.”
